Feature: Shaikh, Peterson, and Formanek

This week's feature harkens back to the 4th New Languages Festival in 2008. In an era with many virtuoso saxophonists, Aaron Ali Shaikh is one of the few who dares to sound utterly unique. In this time period he frequently called upon the two legendary veterans heard here, bassist Michael Formanek and the great percussionist Randy Peterson, to accompany him in a trio. The result is a take on the jazz tradition that is rhythmically and tonally elastic, and lyrical in unexpected, improbable ways.
